影片一：Basics of Growing Venus Flytraps 基本種植小捕守則

在這個影片裡，我將會告訴您基本的小捕栽種技法！大眾普遍都會有對小捕有所誤解，認為他是一個非常難種的植物，這絕對不是真的！很多人害羞不敢栽種小捕，是因為他們害怕在接到小捕很短的時間內就把小捕用死。

你必須要複製小捕們在自然生長的環境，這是非常重要必知的喔！您必須要不斷的去思考，小捕生長的Carolina’s卡羅萊納州的環境為何？小捕這種植物喜歡生長在泥濘的地區，所以囉～你會想到他們需要潮濕的環境，舉例來說～我們這把他們種在有很多很多水的地方，（掀起小捕栽培穴盤給鴨子們看）不間斷的給小捕們提供水分！同時，他們也需要貧瘠土壤的條件，稍後我們將會在另外一個章節談到，小捕們絕對需要生活在沒有任何肥份的土壤環境裡。

同樣的情況在卡羅萊納，小捕們需要長時間且潮濕的環境和充分的陽光，您必須要去想像他們每天接受14個小時，甚至更長的時間陽光直射。另一方面，小捕們是需要冬天休眠的植物，在這幾個月之中，他們需要在華氏30到40度（攝氏-1到5度左右）的低溫環境下休眠，這些都是小捕們在大自然的卡羅萊納一月、二月和十二月時所發生的環境喔！

如果您想要種出健康的小捕來，您必須要知道的另外一件事情，就像他們在野外會抓到小蟲一樣，去餵食小捕們昆蟲或是其他的食物喔！！

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about basic growing tips for the Venus fly trap. Now a commonly held misconception is that the Venus fly trap is a very difficult plant to grow. This isn’t true necessarily but most people shy away from growing this plant because they are afraid that they are going to kill it as soon as they receive the plant. It is important to know that you really want to replicate the conditions that this plant grows in nature. You want to always think about what the conditions would be like in the Carolina’s. These plants tend to grow in bogged areas, so you need to think very wet. For example, we have these plants growing here in lots and lots of water; soaking in water constantly. They also need poor soil conditions. We are going to talk about that in another later segment. They need absolutely no fertilizer under any circumstances. Also since they grow in the Carolina’s, they need very humid conditions and a lot of light all the time. You want to think 14 or more hours of direct sunlight every day. Another aspect to growing Venus fly traps is that they need a period of winter dormancy. This period is few months where they need to be in conditions of about 30 to 40 degrees. Again this is replicating the conditions that they have in nature, which is the type of conditions that would be happening in the Carolina’s in the January, February and December months. Another thing also that you want to do is, if you want to grow healthy fly traps, is to feed them insects or other types of food, just like things they would get in the wild.

影片二：Various Forms of Venus Flytraps 不同個體的小捕

在這個影片裡，我將會和您聊聊不同個體的小捕！在野外，小捕只有自然生活在南、北卡羅萊納州的一小部份區域裡，在園藝栽培上有差不多12種不同個體的小捕，然而在野外，有許許多多不同形狀、顏色差異的個體。在園藝栽培中，我們已經將這些樣式非常特殊的個體特別的培育挑選出來，您可以看到眼前這三種在園藝栽培中常見的小捕們，包含了典型的小捕（Typical Flytrap），還有Dentata（鴨王猜想這裡說得應該是鯊魚齒小捕）和Akai Ryu這兩種小捕。

這裡我們有典型的小捕，（畫面左邊單獨一大盤的）他主要的特色是長又尖的牙齒，而且他的捕蟲夾內還會呈現非常漂亮的紅色調喔！而這裡我們有Dentata小捕（畫面右邊單獨一大盤都是！哇～流口水了啦！）非常短小的三角齒型是他的特色，和典型的小捕相比較下，您可以很輕易的看出他和典型小捕的差異在哪喔！

而下一個是我們講到的Akai Ryu個體，在日本現在叫做Red Dragon（就是台灣的紅龍啦～呱哈！）這種個體最明顯的特色就是在照射充分光線下，全株會展現出鮮紅色調的樣子喔！你也可以發現他和典型小捕一樣，擁有長長的牙齒喔！

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about the various forms of the flytrap. In the wild, the Venus fly trap only grows in one small area naturally in North and South Carolina. In cultivation, there are about 12 different forms of the flytrap. In the wild however, there is a lot of different variation between the form and color of this plant. In cultivation, these different variations have been selectively bred to bring out very different types of characteristics. We can see this in the three main types of flytraps that you will find in cultivation. These include the typical fly trap, the Dentata and the Akai Ryu fly trap. Here we have the typical fly trap. It is characterized mostly by its long thin teeth, and by the fact that it can have this nice red hue inside of its traps. Over here we have the Dentata fly trap. This is characterized by shorter more triangular teeth. It is best seen when you compare it to the typical fly trap. You can really see the difference between the two forms. The next form we have is the Akai Ryu fly trap, which actually mean red dragon in Japanese. The most distinct characteristic of this form is the bright red hue that this trap takes on when it is exposed to plenty of sunlight. You can also see that it has the long teeth that the typical fly trap also has.

影片三：How to Prepare the Best Potting Mix Used of Venus Flytrap 如何準備最佳的小捕栽培介質？

在這次的影片中，我將會和您談談要用什麼樣的混合介質，現在！當您在決定要選何種介質時，您必須要再去回想觀察這些野外小捕們的生長環境，在卡羅萊納小捕們的土質是非常貧饑的，他們幾乎完全生長在纖細的沙上。

通常我們喜愛採用的混合介質組合是peat moss(泥炭土)和pearl light（珍珠石），泥炭土是非常非常貧饑且略酸的介質，而中性的珍珠石只是用來當作增加透氣的介質，您可以在以泥炭土為基礎的情況下，隨意的去搭配混合使用，像是用矽砂來代替珍珠石也行，或是將泥炭土、珍珠石和矽砂一起混用，又或是加入sphagnum moss（水苔）…等等諸如此類的方式。

而我們喜歡用50％的泥炭土混合50％的珍珠石，當我們要混合介質時，您必須要將這兩種不同的介質完全的混合在一起，（大家可以看看我們的Wes兄混合介質那豪爽的手法！呱嗚～鴨王輸了…）

在您為小捕裝盆前，您一定要確認介質足夠潮濕才行，您可以再混合一些水到您的混合介質中。（呱呱呱！不要攪拌到外面去啦～生氣！！！哈哈～龜毛的鴨王！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about what kind of potting mix to use. Now when you are trying to decide on what kind of potting mix to use, you want to focus on again the kind of growing conditions that these plants have in the wild. In the Carolinas, the soil that they grow in is extremely poor. They grow almost completely in the fine white sand. The kind of soil that we like to use is a combination of peat moss and pearl light. Now peat moss is very very poor in nutrients and slightly acidic, and the pearl light is just an inert substance that you can use to have more aeration. Depending on the kind of mixture that you want to use, you always want to use peat moss as a base, but you can also use something like silica sand instead of using pearl light, or you can use a mixture of peat moss, pearl light and silica sand; or you can also throw in some sphagnum moss in addition to everything else. We like to use a mixture of about 50 percent peat moss and about 50 percent pearl light. When we make this mixture, you want to have these two elements completely incorporated with each other. Before you pot your fly traps, you always want to make sure you have the soil well moistened and again, incorporate the water into your mixture.

在影片的片段中，我將要和您談談如何！？到哪！？購買挑選最好的小捕，通常您要盡量避免在大型的零售商店內購買小捕！（放心啦～台灣沒有這類的零售商，在美國許多像7-11的便利商店或是大賣場都有販售小捕喔！真是超羨慕的啦～呱嗚！）這是因為這些小捕通常被栽種在錯誤的環境中，並且在許多壓力下！（小捕也有壓力？呱哈～搞不懂！鴨王只好按照字面意思去翻囉～）有時！您只能在剛進貨的幾周內，發現幾顆看起來還可以，還活著的小捕，那是因為在這！小捕們都生活在許多壓力之下。

就像這樣，你必須要避免長這樣的小捕！（我們的Wes兄手上拿出來的第一顆小捕）我們可以看到他已經有許多死掉的夾子，而且整體看起來長得小又頹廢的樣子，會變成這樣可能有很多原因，他也許被種在光線微弱的地方，也有可能正準備要進入冬眠，或是一些疾病害蟲造成小捕漸漸衰弱死去。

而你應該要找的小捕應該是長這樣，（Wes兄又拿出來的第二顆小捕）他是擁有鮮綠的葉子和非常漂亮的型態，您應該要去專門栽種食蟲植物的店家購買這些健康的小捕，在鄉間有很多這類的栽培園是你可以去的，（呱嗚～真好…台灣並不是隨處都有說～只有少數的園區，而且平時還不開放呢！呱嗚～）您可以在網路上搜尋或是去擁有良好信譽的食蟲植物栽培園，通常！這些人可以告訴您如何栽種小捕們，小捕的栽培環境相當特殊，您必須要一位對小捕非常了解得人才行喔！

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about how and where to buy the best Venus Flytrap. In general, you want to avoid buying fly traps from the big retail stores. This is because these plants are usually grown under the wrong conditions and can be under a lot of stress. Some times you can find a plant that may look like it is okay or alive, but in a few weeks, because it has been under so much stress, it could die. Things you want to avoid are a plant that looks like this. We can see here that it already has a few dead traps, and in general it is small and looking in sort of sad shape. This could be for a number of reasons. It could have been grown in a low light level. It could be about ready to go into dormancy, or there could be some other pests that are causing it to die out. A fly trap that you want to look for is something like this, that has full green leaves and looks like it is in nice shape. Places where you want to go to buy good fly traps are specialty stores that specialize in carnivorous plants. There are a few nurseries around the country that you can go to. You can look them up on the internet just searching for carnivorous plants, or you can go to a local nursery that has a good reputation. Usually the people there should be able to tell you how to cultivate the Venus Fly Trap. The growing conditions are very specific, and you want someone who is very knowledgeable about them.

在這部份的影片中，我們將要和您聊聊小捕的夾子是如何閉合的，了解小捕變異的捕蟲葉是非常重要的一件事情，就像其他植物一般，捕蟲夾閉合的機制是藉由複雜且敏感的感應毛和電流衝擊混合而成，究竟是什麼引發小捕夾子閉合的動作呢？是由捕蟲夾內側敏感的感應毛感應，造成夾子外側的細胞組織瞬間增生的緣故，（如果這段翻得不好還請鴨子們見諒、修正喔！請看我們的Wes兄的手勢解說喔）這就是為何小捕會感受得到小蟲在裡面並且闔上的原因啦！

我們可以自己來觸動小捕內部敏感的感應毛，來觀察看看小捕的變化，（Wes兄！！你想要做什麼！！住手！！！！！！算了～反正你有這麼多顆，隨便你玩啦～呱哈！）當有小蟲之類的東西在裡面爬行時，小捕的夾子會在瞬間閉合，小捕這樣的動作的本領，在食蟲植物界幾乎是獨一無二的喔！這也是為何他被稱為不可思議的植物的原因之一啦

當您嘗試栽培小捕時，絕對不要這樣玩弄小捕的夾子喔！！這是您一定要知道的重要事項喔！頻繁的玩弄小捕會造成小捕的能源大量流失在捕蟲上，而不足以供應自己的成長喔！（對嘛～該說的還是要說嘛～呱！）這可能造成植株太多壓力，甚至造成小捕的死亡喔！！（鴨子們可別和Wes兄一樣學壞喔！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about how the traps on this plant close. It is important to note that the traps of the Venus Fly Trap are really just modified leaves, just like on any other plant; and the way these traps close, is through a complex system of sensitive trigger hairs and electrical impulses. What actually happens when the trap closes…is that the sensitive trigger hairs that are located on the inside of the trap trigger the cells on the outside of the leaf to grow almost instantly. This causes the plant to close like this on any insect that is on the inside. We can see this happening inside of the plant when we trigger the sensitive trigger hairs ourselves. The trap closes almost instantly, on any insect or something else that would be crawling inside of the plant. The Venus Fly Trap is almost unique in the plant world for its ability to move like this. That is one thing that makes it an incredible plant. It is important also to know that you shouldn’t trigger the trap to close when you are trying to cultivate this plant. Doing this too often will make the plant expend too much energy on growing quickly, and not enough energy on growing itself. This can actually cause too much stress on the plant, and even cause the plant to die if it is done too often.

影片六：How to Feed a Venus Flytrap 如何餵食小捕

在這部份的影片中，我們將要討論餵食您的小捕，當您餵食小捕時最重要的指引，就是給他們在野外也能抓得到的食物，像是昆蟲、蜘蛛、蟋蟀和螞蟻這些東西對小捕來說是最完美的，您必須要避免像是漢堡肉、熱狗或是火腿等這類的食物，這類我們自以為有益於小捕的食物，可能會在幾天或是給週內害死小捕喔！

你也可以用一些剛被宰殺的昆蟲，我們的客人常常會問我們這類的問題，所以囉～如果您有一隻螞蟻，害怕他會跑到小捕夾外，您可以先把他壓扁後，丟到小捕夾中正確的位置，（鴨王並不建議像Wes兄這樣做！根據許多資料顯示，小捕喜愛捕食活體的昆蟲，如果昆蟲沒有在捕蟲夾內掙扎，小捕並不會釋放出消化液將其消化，只會當作夾到一般的石子而漸漸放開夾子喔！）我們通常喜愛使用的是這種蟲子！（鴨王看了老半天，推測是麵包蟲說～影片實在太小了～呱嗚！）他們是一種蛾類的幼蟲，他們幾乎沒有包含什麼礦物質，這一點很重要喔！因為如果您餵食小捕含有高礦物質的蟲，像是費克尼司蟲（Phoenix Worms一種蟲類，鴨王也不知道台灣叫做什麼？有興趣的好友可以上網查詢看圖喔！）會在一段時間後導致小捕的死亡喔！

所以當您在餵食您的小捕時，您必須要將昆蟲或是食物直直的放到捕蟲夾的內側，（Wes兄不要殺生啊！！OH!～NOOOO!!）等到夾子完全閉合時，在將您的夾子或手指離開囉～（唉～算了！願小蟲安息吧～）您可以經常餵食打開的小捕夾，而且您可以餵食單株小捕多個捕蟲夾，通常小捕夾子會在5-10天內消化完畢再次打開，而那時您可以再將食物放入餵食喔！（鴨王建議依據小捕的大小來分配食物，同一株請不要一次餵食超過三個夾子，小株的只需要餵食一個夾子就夠了！過度的餵食並不見得會為小捕帶來好處！）如果您將小捕種植在戶外，尤其是在夏天裡，您可以不用擔心小捕們，他們也能夠自己捕食餵飽自己喔！！

In this video segment I am going to talk to you about feeding your Venus fly trap. So the most important guideline when you are feeding your Venus fly trap is to only give it food that it can find in the wild. Things like insects, spiders, crickets and ants are perfect for the Venus fly trap. You want to stay away from foods like hamburger or hot dog or ham. These types of food, that we may think are good for the fly trap, can kill the plant in a matter of days or weeks. You can also use insects that are newly killed. Our customer’s often ask us about this. So if you have an ant that you are afraid that will run out of the trap, you can squash it and put it right inside of the fly trap. The types of thing we like to use are these worms. These are from a glarus species of moth. They contain absolutely no or very little calcium. This is very important, because worms that have a high calcium content, like Phoenix worms, will cause the plant to go rigid after feeding several times. So when you are feeding your fly trap, you want to place the insect or food item directly inside of the trap, wait till it starts to close, and then remove your tweezers or your fingers. You can feed the fly trap as often as it will open its traps, and you can feed as many traps as the fly trap has. Usually it will take about 5 to 10 days for the trap to open again, at which time you can put more food inside. If you are growing your fly trap outside, especially during the summer, the plants will have no problem catching insects on your own.

影片七：Treating Pests & Diseases of the Venus Flytrap 治療小捕的蟲害和疾病

在這段影片中，我們將要談到一些會傷害到小捕的共同疾患，通常很少有疾病或是蟲害會傷害到您的小捕，但是您常見到的病蟲害大多是像蚜蟲或是不同種的黴菌，食蟲植物卻被蟲所食，雖然聽起來有點諷刺，可是它的的確確偶爾會發生！如果您正受蚜蟲之苦，您可以使用一種叫Ornithine的產品(台灣並沒有，有點像是矽藻素，可是替代品也很多，只要您到花市去詢問一下就可以囉～)這是我們常常喜愛使用的，如您所看他常常是圓圓的一罐，您只要找到以治療盆土介質為主的，您只要將這些粉灑一些在盆土上，或是圍著盆栽灑一圈也可以，這類的產品會確切的滲入介質內，由根部吸收傳送到小捕葉面及全身，當小蟲咬食小捕時就會被毒死，但是他應該是不會對小捕造成傷害才。

另外一個常見的病害就是黴菌，您可以看看這盆憂鬱的小捕（呱哈～鴨王就是要這樣翻囉～請各位看看Wes兄手上的小捕吧！）這就有可能有黴菌在小捕的身上或是土裡，在治療小捕前，您必須要先確認小捕不是因為其他因素而虛弱，像是水質的問題，或是小捕可能要進入冬眠時期…等等，我們喜歡使用Captane，（也是台灣沒有的殺菌劑）或是其他使用在植物上的殺菌劑，您必須將藥劑溶解混合在水中，然後像這樣的噴灑在植株的表面，這樣就可以好好解決您黴菌，或是其他蟲害的問題啦～（鴨王補充一下！台灣並沒有太多的殺菌劑，尤其是這類具有毒性的農藥大多是限制購買的，如果不是農夫一般人很難買的到，鴨王建議鴨子們盡量讓小捕們接受充分的陽光，還有保持空氣的流通，一旦有發現病狀的小捕，要立刻將其隔離觀察，避免病害的擴散喔！只有平時多增強小捕的抵抗力，才是最好的抗菌法，噴藥實在不是好的預防解決之道囉！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about common diseases that may plague your Venus fly trap plant. In general, there aren’t very many diseases or pests that may harm your plant, but the most common ones you may encounter are things like aphid or different types of fungus. It may seem a little bit ironic that a carnivorous plant may suffer from an insect disease, but this does occasionally happen. If you are suffering from aphids, you can use a product called Ornithine; this is something we like to use. It comes in a pellet form as you can see here, and you just want to treat the soil of the plant. You really only want to put on a dozen or so of these small pellets around the soil of the plant. This product, this insecticide will be absorbed into the soil through the roots and up into the leaves of the fly trap. When the insects try to bite the leaves of the fly trap, they will then die from the poison, but this shouldn’t harm your plant. Another common pest, or disease rather, is the fungus. You can see here that this plant is looking kind of sad shape, and it may have a little bit of fungus on the plant or on the soil. You want to make sure that this plant isn’t dying for another reason, like a low water level, or it could be going into dormancy before you treat it. We like to use here this captane, or other fungicides that you use for the plant. Here, you want to mix it up in solution, and then spray it on top of the plant like this, and that should take care of your fungus problem, or any of your insect problems that you are having.

影片八：Venus Flytrap Leaf Cutting Propagation葉插和分株繁殖小捕

在這一段影片中，我將要告訴您，透過葉插分株來繁殖小捕，當您有一株像這樣成熟的小捕時，（請看Wes兄手上的小捕）您將會看到從母株旁開始長出小小捕，這時！您就可以開始透過劃分切割小捕葉片來繁殖他們，所以囉～第一步是盡可能小心優雅的將小捕從盆土中挖出，並且將圍繞在小捕基部的介質清除乾淨，有時！您可以發現這小顆的小捕已經完全和母株分離，您可以將他分開後放到旁邊，然後繼續分離母株根部的土壤介質，這時您可以看到母株準備分株的部位，這時我所需要做的只是找出大概的分離點，然後盡可能讓他們保有根系的分離他們，我們可以從這顆母株再分離一次，盡其可能的將他剝離開來，（鴨王提醒大家，分株時～保留根系的小捕，存活繁殖的機率都很大喔！當然！沒有根系的也是有機會長出新的根系，那就是屬於葉插的繁殖法囉～）

當您分離玩小捕們後，您可以準備好您的介質，確定這些介質是優質且潮濕的，然後我們可以一個一個像這樣把小捕們種進去，（請看Wes兄為大家表演活埋小捕！呱哈～）

當您想要藉由葉插的方式來繁殖小捕時，您要將小捕從白色莖部到上端捕蟲夾整個像這樣小心的剝離，輕輕的將球莖狀的底部分離，您必須盡可能完整的將他剝下，（鴨王強烈建議鴨子們連同白色球莖部一起剝離是最好的，不要只有剝下上端夾子和綠色的葉柄而已喔！）當您方離小捕葉片後，您可以使用一些發根劑或粉，像這樣在葉片白色基部沾上一些發根劑後，將小捕的葉片平躺在土壤上，您可以再上端蓋上一些土來穩固他，正常來說～新生的小捕會從底端白色基部長出來。

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about propagating your Venus fly trap through leaf cutting and division. Once you have a mature plant like this one here, you will see that it should start to grow smaller fly traps from the base of the plant. At this point, you can start to divide your Venus fly trap and propagate it through leaf cutting. So the first step is to remove it from the pot as gently as possible, and you want to remove the soil from around the base of the plant. At this point, sometimes as you can see here the smaller individual plant will be completely separate from the mother plant. You want to set this one aside and continue taking the soil away from the mother plant. At this point, you can see that the mother plant is ready to be divided at the rye zone. All we need to do is just find more or less where the two separate plants are, and then divide them separating as much roots as we can. We can even make another division in the case of this plant, again, peeling the plant that from the rye zone as carefully as possibly. After you have divided the fly trap, you want to take your potting soil—make sure that it is nice and moist—and then we could just plant these plants directly in the soil like so. When you are propagating your plant from leaf cutting, you want to take the plant here by the leaf and peel it back from the rye zone. Very gently, like this. Similar to peeling a head of lettuce. You want to go down and get the whole plant. After you’ve peeled it back, you want to use some sort of rooting hormone, place the base of the leaf just a little bit in the rooting hormone like this, and then you want to place the leaf flat on the soil. You can put a little bit of soil around the leaf to hold it down. Normally new plants will start to sprout from the base of the leaf.

影片九：Venus Flytrap Seed Propagation播種繁殖小捕

在這段影片之中，我將要和您討論用種子來繁殖小捕，每年春天時，小捕會開始開花，如果正確的授粉的話，他就會產生種子，在這個容器中，我們有一些今年早春時小捕乾燥的花朵和種子，這些又小又亮的黑色小東西就是小捕的種子，（看的不是很清楚！昏倒～）這些種子非常的小，可是幾乎每顆小捕的每朵花，都可以製造大約十二顆這種小種子。

當您要種植這些小捕時，您必須要準備一個黑色的小盆子，然後使用之前您種植母株的介質，您必須確定介質足夠的潮濕，您可以在每盆中放入適當數量的種子，（如果以三吋盆為例的話，大約可以放5-8顆種子）您必須確切的將這盆種子放置在有充分光線的地方，而且您也必須要確定土壤能夠維持良好且潮濕，並且處在高溼度的環境下。

這些小小捕是從種子開始種植大約一年左右，（Wes兄用錢幣當做比例，左邊的那盆，幾乎沒看到小捕的形狀說…）如你所見，這些小捕實在是超級小，當小捕從種子開始種起，成長速度是非常慢的，而這一盆大約是種植兩年左右的小捕，您可以看出他們有多小，小捕通常要花三到四年的時間，他們才有辦法成長到成熟的尺寸，成熟的小捕會在每年的春天開始開花，而小捕的這些花朵會製造出上百顆的種子。（有時小捕還沒成熟時也會開花，這時為了避免小捕因為開花而消耗太多體力陣亡，通常會將花梗切除禁止他們開花喔！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about propagating your Venus Fly trap from seeds. Every spring, the Venus Fly Trap produces a flower. If that flower is pollinated correctly, it will produce seeds. So here in this container we have dried flowers and seeds from the Venus Fly Trap that produced them earlier this year. Now the seeds of the Venus Fly Trap are these tiny shiny black things. They are very small, but each Venus Fly Trap will produce dozens of them per flower. When you are growing them from seeds, you want to take a small black pot, using the same soil that you would pot mature plants in. You want to make sure that the soil is real moist, and you can put several seeds in each pot. You want to make sure that you place this pot under lots of light, and you also want to make sure that the soil stays nice and moist and it is in very humid conditions. This plant has been growing from a seed for about a year. As you can see, the plant is extremely small. When grown from seeds, Venus Fly Traps really grow very slowly. This one here has been growing for about 2 years from seed and again, you can see how small it is. The Venus Fly Traps will grow for about 3 or 4 years before they reach their mature size. At which point you will be able to tell they are fully mature, because they will start to produce a flower every spring. From that flower, they will produce hundreds of seeds every year.

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about transplanting your Venus Fly Trap. Now there are a few reasons why you would want to transplant your fly trap. You want to make sure that you are not transplanting it directly after you just bought it. This is usually because the plant can be under some stress after it has been transported, and you don’t want to disturb it too much. Usually after the plant has grown for several years and is quite large like this plant or this one here, it is about time to transplant it to another place. Also, if you want to make a nice center piece, we are going to use this bowl here, you can transplant your fly traps. You do want to make sure to note, though, that transplanting your plants will cause them a little bit of stress, and you want to leave them alone for a while after you start transplanting them. So again, we want to use the right kind of soil. Here we have a mixture of peat moss and pearl light that has already been moistened. We are going to fill the bowl up about a quarter of the way up, and you want to make sure not to pack the soil down too much. You want to leave the soil nice and loose for the roots of the fly trap. When you start to transplant, you want to be very careful of the leaves of the plant. Gently taking the plant out of its pot…and you want to remove quite a bit of the soil from around the roots of the plant. Here we can see that the actual root ball of the Venus Fly Trap is extremely small. The roots are very shallow, and they really don’t need a whole lot of space for their roots. Here is the rye zone of the plant, which is really the core of the Venus Fly Trap, this white fleshy part. So we are going to make a small hole for this fly trap, place it down in the soil and just bring the soil right around the plant. Nice and easy. You don’t want to pack it down too hard. We are going to repeat this part process for each one of these plants. After you have planted the fly traps, you want to make sure to give them a good watering afterwards; and now we have a nice display piece.

保護在野外原生地和正逐漸減少的小捕，是非常重要的一點，您可以在確定您所購買的小捕是正確來源上，盡一份保育的心力，您可以依據之前那些非常簡單的栽培指南，好好的享受個人的收集樂趣！而且您也可以種植出新的和健康的小捕，來盡一份分享保育小捕的心喔！（台灣雖然沒有野生的食蟲可採，除了一些毛兒外…可是鴨子們也絕對不能夠因為任何理由，而把您栽種的食蟲植物遺棄在野外喔！切記切記！您錯誤的行為和想法可能會造成無可挽回的慘案！如果您覺得植物太多，可以到論壇或是網路上分享販售給喜歡他們的人，最壞的選擇也是要將其火化銷毀喔！！）

In this last video segment, I am going to talk to you about the conservation of the Venus fly trap. Even though these plants are very common in cultivation, they only grow in one small area in North and South Carolina. Their habitat is constantly threatened by development and other things. They grow in wetlands, like bogs or other wet areas, and these areas are constantly being threatened by drainage for developments like shopping malls and housing. Another important thing to note is to make sure that you are buying your plants from a reputable source. This is because some plants that you can find have been poached from the wild. Poached plants are usually much larger or much more expensive than plants that you can buy in cultivation. If you have a doubt of the reputation of the source that you are buying your plants from, don’t buy the plants. These plants are extremely easy to find in your local nursery or even on-line. It is extremely important that we conserve the natural habitat of the Venus fly trap because it is dying off in the wild. You can do your part by making sure that you get your Venus fly traps from a reputable source. You can enjoy this plant in your private collection extremely just by following very simple growing directions, and you can also do your part by making sure that you grow new and healthy plants.

這裡我們有設置了許多不同種類的食蟲植物，我們將他們全部種在園藝栽培燈下，如果您採用人造光線來照顧您的小捕時，有一件非常重要的事情，您必須要將他們放在這裡，然後讓他們距離燈光差不多一英呎、或是比十二英吋更少，（差不多15公分以內）當您在使用這些人造燈光時，您必須要確定不要採用會製造高溫、高熱的燈光，任何種類的白光燈可能會在短時間或是幾個小時內殺死您的植物，（鴨王補充說明！一般的日光燈管還有PL燈管都是可以接受的，當然！專門的栽培燈是最佳的選擇！因為不同燈管有不同的色溫！對植物的需求也都不同！鴨子們請不要採用鹵素燈，這類的燈具會發出高溫造成傷害。）

當然！自然的陽光是您最好的選擇啦～如果您能夠把小捕栽種在戶外，並且讓他接受14個小時甚至更多的陽光直射，那是你最佳的選擇！否則的話，您要確定讓小捕們接受相同時數的人造光線。

我們喜歡採用的是自動機械定時的植物燈，（請看Wes兄拿出的寶貝！這是他們自己開發的商品，有趣的自動定時小檯燈！不過好像只足夠一顆小捕來使用，這是唯一美中不足的。）他非常適合用在單獨小型的植物，就像小捕一樣！你必須要確定植物燈光距離植株4或6英寸左右，那是因為這種燈光並不會特別強烈，你必須盡可能的讓燈光接近小捕，然後相同的，讓小捕們接受超過14個小時以上的光線直射。

So here we have a set up of lots of different carnivorous plants, and we are growing them all under florescent light. That’s one of the most important things if you are using artificial light for your Venus fly traps. You want to take them here and place them about a foot…12 inches or less, underneath the lights. You always want to make sure when you are using artificial light, not to use any type of light that produces a large amount of heat; so any type of incandescent light will burn your plants and kill them in a matter of hours sometimes. Of course, natural light is the best kind of light you want to use. If you can grow your plants outside, in an area that is going to get 14 or more hours of direct sunlight every day, you want to do that. Otherwise you want to make sure that they are getting artificial light for about that same amount of time. Now a good item that we like to use is this automatic plant light. This works well for a single small plant, like this. You want to make sure that the plant light is about 4 or 6 inches above the plant. Because this light is not very intense, you want to have it as close to the plant as possible. And again, providing your plant with about 14 or more hours of direct light every day.

當夏天結束在小捕進入冬眠前，您可以盡情的修剪小捕老葉，讓他們看起來美觀、整齊又健康。（鴨王補充說明，小捕如果要讓他長的更好，最好的方式就是不要去無謂的打擾他們，不管您是要修剪還是分株換土，最好一年只有一次就好，平時除了餵食和施肥外，就盡量少去動他們啦～要動他們的話盡量在休眠完，或是要進入休眠時喔！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about pruning your Venus Fly Trap. It is important to know that the traps of the fly trap, like I said before, are just modified leaves that you would have on any other plant. These leaves will grow old and die. This is just the natural life cycle of the Venus Fly Trap. So usually what happens is that, as the fly trap leafs out a new trap like this one, an old trap will start to die, as you can see here. What you want to do when you are pruning…we like to use just simple pruning scissors. You go in and trim the dead traps as close to the base of the plant as possible. If you have traps that are just dead at the top, like this one here, you can just trim off the dead head and leave most of the stem. This is because the stem is still going through the process of photosynthesis and is still producing energy for the plant. At the end of the summer and before the plant goes into dormancy, you can start to trim off as many leaves as you like really just for aesthetic purposes, to create more symmetry and to make your plant looking as best as possible.

如果您將小捕栽種在溼度環境高的室內，您可以把他們種在像這樣小型的盆子裡，但是您還是需要一個小的水盤，好讓小捕能夠不間斷的吸收水份，你必須要時常確認保持小捕的土讓潮濕，（就如我們Wes兄示範給各位看的第一種方式）你也可以就像這樣的把小捕放到室外空氣溼度高的地方栽種。

如果您必須把小捕栽種在空氣溼度非常乾燥的環境時，您可以像這樣把小捕栽種在球形玻璃盆內，這種形狀的盆子可以保持盆內的溼度在裡面不會散失，但是您還是要記得每天或是一定時間的去噴灑水分喔！您可以把他們拿到室內或是戶外栽種，但是你必須要確定他們的上部沒有任何遮蔽物，那是因為小捕也需要良好的空氣循環喔！

In this video segment I am going to talk to you about watering your Venus Fly Trap. So again like I was talking to you about before, you want to make sure you try to replicate the conditions that these plants grow in naturally as much as you possibly can. These plants grow in bogged type conditions, so you want to grow them in a lot of water like we have here. The kind of water that you use is very important. You want to make sure that you only use distilled water or rain water. This is extremely important, because any type of water that has any chlorine in it or any other strong minerals can kill these plants in a matter of days. If you are growing your plant inside of your house, and there is a lot of air humidity, you can grow it in a small pot like this, but you also need a small dish of water so that the plant can soak in water constantly. You always want to make sure that the soil of your Venus Fly Trap is well moist. You can grow it like this. You can also grow this plant outside in a region that has high air humidity. If you are growing your plant in an area that is very dry and has very dry air, you can grow it in a bowl like this. The shape of the bowl will keep most of the humidity in, but you also want to make sure you are misting this bowl almost every day or several times a day. You can grow this inside or outside, but you want to make sure to keep top of this bowl uncovered. This is because the plants need a lot of air circulation also.

如果您居住在類似潮濕且有季節性的環境中，您可以把他們種植在戶外，當溫度低到華氏30-40度時，小捕們就會開始進入冬眠，我們所要做的只有修整一下小捕的葉夾，讓他準備進入冬眠去啦～（請各位看看Wes兄修整手上的小捕）如果您居住在研熱的地方，您可以把小捕放到您家中的冰箱裡，當您有很多小捕時，首先你可以先把小捕們從盆子裡拿出，我們可以看到這顆小捕的基部還保有一些良好的介質，然後在塑膠袋中放入一些新鮮的土，再將小捕放置到袋子之中，用袋子把小捕的溼度和水分封住，你可以使用橡皮筋或是什麼得來固定住袋子，然後就可以把這些小捕放到冰箱裡的蔬菜櫃子中，或是把他們放到可以比夏天還要涼爽的地下室或是窗戶旁，還是可以接受到一些陽光照射的地方。

再次提到非常重要的一點，就是您要確認在整個冬天裡，小捕他們還能夠保持豐富的水分和溼度，他們需要三到四個月的時間來休眠，通常是從十二月一直到二、三月左右。（鴨王補充一下，小捕在台灣的北部除非是有一定高度的山區外，不然很難讓小捕們完全進入冬眠，鴨王建議是將小捕們的給水降低，並且直接將他們放置在戶外陰涼處，看看能否進入夢鄉，而南部的朋友們可能就只有剩下冰箱一途了說～如果一直都不讓小捕進入夢鄉，在經過幾年後～小捕就會漸漸的虛弱死亡喔！）

In this video segment, I am going to talk to you about dormancy. Dormancy is extremely an important part of the natural life cycle of the Venus Fly Trap. In nature and its habitat in the Carolina’s, it goes through a period of cold temperature where most of the plant dies back. In the spring, it will grow again and you will have a nice healthy plant, but it is important to replicate this natural life cycle if you don’t live in an area like the Carolina’s. If you do live in a similar climate that is going to be humid and relatively warm throughout the winter, you can keep this plant growing outside, as long as the temperature does not go much below the 30’s or 40’s. This plant here has started to go into dormancy. What we want to do is trim back the dead leaves and get ready to put it into the winter dormancy. If you live in a very hot climate, you can place this plant in your refrigerator, and if you have a lot of plants, what you can do is take it out of the pot first. We can see that there is still a good amount of soil around the base of this plant. You want to put some soil in a plastic bag first; just a little bit of soil. Place the plant inside the soil inside the bag, and this is to lock in humidity and moisture for the plant. You want to place a rubber band or something else to secure the bag. You can place this inside the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator. Other places that you can put this plant is inside your basement, maybe on a window sill where it is going to be nice and cool over the summer, but still receive a bit of direct sunlight. Again the most important thing here is to make sure that it gets plenty of humidity and moisture throughout the winter. It needs a period of dormancy of about 3 or 4 months usually from about December to late February or March.
